North Korea working on additional nuclear, missile tests: spy agency

North Korea might carry out a new nuclear test alongside missile launches, as brisk activity has been spotted at its research facilities, South Korea's spy agency said during a parliamentary audit Thursday.
During the audit, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) said Pyongyang could likely begin the work of reprocessing spent fuel rods at its main nuclear complex in Yongbyon late this year.
"The North will carry out an additional nuclear test and continue to push for the development of miniaturized, diversified nuclear warheads," the NIS was quoted as saying by lawmakers who attended the audit, according to Yonhap.
The NIS said that there has been "active movement" of vehicles around a missile research facility in Pyongyang. It said this is an indication that the reclusive regime could resume its provocations for the first time since the last one in September.
The agency also said that Tunnel 3 at the Punggye-ri test site is ready for a nuclear test "at any time," while it would take a considerable amount of time to prepare Tunnel 4 for a new underground nuclear experiment.
In addition, the NIS, noted the possibility of damage at the nuclear test site, pointing to three aftershocks that occurred following the North's sixth and most powerful test, Sept. 3.
According to a report from Japan's TV Asahi, about 200 people may have died when tunnels collapsed at the test site last month. The regime detonated an underground nuclear device Sept.3 at the Punggye-ri site in northeast North Korea, setting off an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.3. The reports said about 100 people got caught in a collapsed tunnel around Oct.10, while others were trapped in a further collapse during rescue attempts.
However, the North's Korea Central News Agency denied the report, saying it was "a false and plot," Thursday.

통신은 '이것은 그 어떤 군사적 위협과 야만적인 제재로도 우리의 핵 무력 발전을 막을 수 없게 된 미국과 일본 반동들이 우리를 정치 도덕적으로 중상하기 위해 얼마나 비열하고 악랄하게 책동하고 있는가를 여실히 보여주고 있다'고 주장했다.
앞서 일본 TV아사히는 북한 북동부 풍계리 핵실험장에서 지난달 10일께 지하갱도를 만드는 공사 중에 붕괴사고가 일어났다면서 '이 사고로 100명이 지하갱도 공사장에 갇혔으며, 이들에 대해 구조작업을 하는 사이에 추가 붕괴사고가 일어나 총 200여 명이 숨졌을 가능성이 있는 것으로 파악됐다'고 지난달 31일 보도했다.
이에 대해 미국 CNN방송은 1일(현지시간) 미국 당국자들이 이런 내용의 일본 언론 보도를 일축했다고 보도하기도 했다. (연합)
