China on Tuesday called for North Korea to comply with U.N. resolutions, responding to a threat by the North's leader Kim Jong-un that his country would soon conduct a nuclear warhead test.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Beijing urged the "relevant country to adhere to U.N. Security Council resolutions."

Lu also urged "all relevant parties" to stop taking actions that could further raise tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has been slapped with new U.N. sanctions following its fourth nuclear test and rocket launch this year.

The North Korean leader issued the threat as he supervised a successful simulation of atmospheric re-entry of a ballistic missile, according to the North's state media earlier in the day. (Yonhap)
